Body Check

Defence

Place a leg across their hips to stop a knee or kick and force distance back between you.

How to throw it

Raise a leg and place it across their hips, extending to stop an incoming knee or kick and drive space back between you. Keep your balance over the standing leg and your hands up as you frame with the foot on their waistline. Use the check to break their forward pressure, then step off to your preferred angle.

When to use it

Use it to shut down a knee or kick and re-establish distance when an opponent is closing or crowding you. Framing across the hips stops the strike and forces them back, resetting the range on your terms.

Common mistakes

  • Placing the foot too high or too low on the torso so it slides off instead of framing the hips
  • Hopping onto the check with your weight forward and getting pulled off balance
  • Dropping the hands while the leg goes up, leaving the head open as you frame low
