Body Jab
Punches · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)
Jab to the midsection; changes levels and draws the guard down.
How to throw it
Bend the knees to drop your level and extend the lead-hand jab into the midsection, keeping the arm straight and the rear hand tight to the chin. Time the level change so your head moves off the centre line as you dip. Snap the punch back and rise, ready for the follow-up upstairs.
When to use it
The body jab changes levels and draws the opponent's guard down, opening the head for shots that follow. Use it to break a static guard and to close distance behind a threat that pulls attention low.
Common mistakes
- Bending at the waist instead of the knees, which drops your head forward onto a counter.
- Leaving the rear hand low as you dip, exposing your chin during the level change.
- Reaching down with the arm alone rather than changing levels with the legs, so the jab lands soft.
