Lead Block

Defence · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)

Cover with the lead glove and forearm to absorb a strike.

How to throw it

Bring the lead glove and forearm together into a tight cover and meet the strike on the guard, keeping the elbow down and the forearm vertical. Absorb the shot by bracing rather than reaching for it, letting arm and glove take the impact while your chin stays tucked behind. Stay compact so the block does not open a gap on the other side.

When to use it

Use it as a reliable stop for a strike coming down your lead side when you have no time to slip or move. Blocking keeps you covered and in range, ready to fire back the moment the pressure comes off.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching out to meet the strike and opening a gap between glove and head
  • Letting the elbow flare so the block leaves the body and ribs exposed
  • Taking the impact stiff-armed rather than bracing the frame, so the shot jars straight through the guard
