Lead Catch
Defence · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)
Catch an incoming kick under the lead arm to control and counter.
How to throw it
As the kick comes in, bring the lead arm and elbow down to trap the incoming leg against your side, clamping it under the arm to stop its momentum. Keep your rear hand up and your base wide so the force of the kick does not turn or topple you. Once the leg is controlled, step in and counter or off-balance the opponent while they are stuck on one leg.
When to use it
Catch a rear kick or teep coming to your lead side when you read it early and want to punish it rather than simply block. A caught kick hands you the initiative: the opponent is on one leg and open, ready for a counter punch, kick, or a sweep off the trapped leg.
Common mistakes
- Catching with a limp arm rather than clamping the leg tight, so it slips free before you can counter.
- Standing narrow or leaning into the catch, letting the kick's force turn you off balance.
- Trapping the leg but freezing instead of countering immediately, giving the opponent time to recover their base.
