Lead High Block
Defence · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)
Lead arm pressed tight to the head, turning slightly away so a head kick lands on arm and shoulder.
How to throw it
Press the lead arm tight against the head and turn slightly away from the kick so it lands across arm and shoulder rather than the temple. Keep the elbow high and the shoulder rolled up to meet the shin, bracing the neck so the impact does not snap your head. Stay compact and hold the frame until the kick clears.
When to use it
Use it to cover against a head kick coming down your lead side when there is no time to check or lean out. Turning into the block spreads the force across arm and shoulder and keeps you conscious and covered to counter.
Common mistakes
- Holding the arm away from the head so the kick drives your own arm into your skull
- Turning too far and losing sight of the opponent, blinding yourself to the follow-up
- Bracing only the arm and not the neck, so the head whips even when the block is clean
