Lead Kick

Kicks · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)

Roundhouse off the lead leg, usually with a small step or switch to load it.

How to throw it

Load the lead-leg roundhouse with a small step or a switch to bring the hip into it, then turn the standing foot over and swing the shin through the target as the hip rolls. Keep your arms active for balance and to guard the head, and rotate fully so the kick lands with the shin, not the foot. Bring the leg back cleanly to reset your stance.

When to use it

The lead kick is quick to fire because the leg is already forward, so you use it to score, to disrupt rhythm, and to attack the lead leg or body without the wind-up of a rear kick. The small step or switch loads it when you need extra power.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the switch or step so the hip never loads, leaving a weak, arm-balanced kick.
  • Failing to pivot the standing foot, which stops the hip turning through the target.
  • Landing with the instep instead of the shin, risking your foot and softening the blow.
