Step Out Lead

Movement · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)

Step off line to your lead side, out of the line of fire.

How to throw it

Push off and step your feet toward your lead side, moving off the straight line the opponent is attacking down while keeping your stance intact. Land with your weight balanced and your guard up so you are ready to defend or fire from the new position. Move the feet together so you never cross your legs or square up.

When to use it

Step out to your lead side to clear the line of fire and reset at an angle rather than backing straight up into more pressure. Use it to break rhythm against a fighter walking you down in a straight line.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing the feet as you step, leaving you off balance and vulnerable mid-move
  • Stepping too small so you stay in the same line you were trying to leave
  • Dropping the guard while moving instead of staying covered through the step
