Rear Body Block

Defence · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Rear knee up to the inside of the rear elbow, closing the open side against a kick to the ribs.

How to throw it

Bring the rear knee up to the inside of the rear elbow, sealing the open side so shin and arm meet the kick as one barrier. Keep your weight settled over the standing leg and the guard tight to the head, taking the impact on bone rather than the ribs. Return the leg to stance under control to stay balanced for your counter.

When to use it

Use it to shut down a round kick to your rear-side ribs, which is the more open target in your stance. Closing that gap with shin and arm shields the body and leaves you set to fire back once the kick lands.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the block into a flinch that swings the knee up but leaves a gap between shin and elbow
  • Leaning away and dumping your weight off the standing leg, so the kick tips you over
  • Dropping the rear hand from the head while lifting the knee, trading a body opening for a head opening
