Step Out Rear
Movement · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)
Step off line to your rear side, angling toward their open side.
How to throw it
Step your feet toward your rear side, angling off the centre line and toward the opponent's open side as you go. Keep your stance width and your guard so you arrive balanced and pointed at a target their guard is not covering. Move both feet in sequence without crossing them or turning your hips away from the fight.
When to use it
Step out to the rear side to escape the line of attack while gaining the angle on their open side, setting up a counter into space their guard cannot reach. It is a way to circle out of pressure and into your own offence at once.
Common mistakes
- Stepping away from the opponent rather than angling toward their open side, giving up the counter
- Squaring your hips as you step, which flattens your stance and telegraphs the exit
- Letting the feet drift too wide so you cannot fire off the new angle
