Rear Uppercut

6

Punches · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Rising power punch off the rear hand, driven from the legs.

How to throw it

Sink slightly into the legs and explode the rear uppercut upward, driving from the legs and turning the rear hip as the fist rises palm-in through the target. Keep the elbow close so the punch stays compact, and hold the lead hand high to cover the opening. Let the legs, not the arm, generate the lift.

When to use it

The rear uppercut is a heavy inside power shot, ideal when an opponent crouches, covers up, or fights from a low, tight guard. It splits a high guard up the centre and pairs well after hooks that turn the head.

Common mistakes

  • Muscling it with the arm instead of driving up from the legs, so the power never arrives.
  • Dropping the rear hand back to wind up, telegraphing the shot and dropping your guard.
  • Standing too tall and upright, which removes the leg drive the punch depends on.
