Weave Lead
Defence · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)
Dip under the hook and come up on your lead side, in position to counter.
How to throw it
Bend your knees and dip your head under the incoming hook, rolling toward your lead side and coming back up in a balanced stance. Keep your guard tight and your chin tucked through the whole arc so the hook slides over the top. Come up already squared and loaded so you are in position to counter immediately.
When to use it
Weave to your lead side to slip under a hook and reset on an angle from which you can fire back straight away. It is your answer to looping punches at mid-range where blocking would only absorb the shot.
Common mistakes
- Weaving with the waist only and leaving the head high, so the hook still catches you
- Standing straight up out of the weave instead of coming up in a counter-ready stance
- Dropping the guard as you dip, which opens you to the follow-up cross
