Rear Parry

Defence · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Deflect the jab across with the rear hand, opening the counter down the middle.

How to throw it

Meet the incoming jab with your rear hand and deflect it across your centreline, redirecting it rather than pushing hard against it. Keep the movement small and stay square enough to fire straight back, since the parry opens a clean lane down the middle. Reset the rear hand to your chin the instant the jab passes.

When to use it

Use it against a jab-heavy opponent at long range when you want to turn their lead hand into your opening. Deflecting the jab across leaves the middle exposed, so it sets up an immediate cross or straight counter.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching out to slap the jab instead of catching it close, which drops your guard and leaves you swinging at air
  • Parrying so far across that you turn your own shoulders and lose the straight counter down the middle
  • Leaving the rear hand out after the deflection instead of snapping it back to the chin
