Slip Rear

Defence · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Slip the head to your rear side, outside their cross.

How to throw it

Shift your head to your rear side with a bend of the knees and waist, moving just outside the path of their cross. Keep the chin tucked and your hands up, letting the straight glide past your ear rather than diving under it. Load the rear leg so the slip coils you for a return shot.

When to use it

Use it to beat the rear straight, taking your head off the line while staying in range to answer. Slipping outside the cross puts you on the outside of their power hand, a strong spot to counter from.

Common mistakes

  • Slipping inside the cross instead of outside it, walking your head into a hook
  • Ducking straight down rather than to the rear side, which meets the punch instead of avoiding it
  • Over-rotating and leaving your weight parked on the rear leg with no path back to stance
