Body Cross

Punches · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Straight rear punch to the body, dipping the level as you throw.

How to throw it

Dip your level as you throw the straight rear punch to the body, bending the knees and rotating the rear hip so power drives into the midsection. Keep the punch straight and the lead hand high to cover the return. Sink your weight with the shot but stay balanced so you can stand back up and continue.

When to use it

The body cross is a heavy investment to the torso, best when the opponent's hands are high or when you want to slow their movement and drain the tank. It pairs naturally after a jab that fixes the guard upstairs.

Common mistakes

  • Dipping the level by folding at the waist rather than the knees, tipping your head into danger.
  • Failing to rotate the rear hip, so the punch loses the drive that makes a body shot count.
  • Dropping the lead hand as you commit downstairs, opening a clear lane for the counter.
