Rear Horizontal Elbow

Elbows · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Horizontal rear elbow (sok ti) across the jaw or brow. Called simply as the elbow of that side.

How to throw it

Fire the rear elbow horizontally across the jaw or brow (sok ti), driving it with a full rotation of the rear hip and shoulder. Turn the point of the elbow into the target and keep your lead hand high to cover the return. Land at close range with the whole body turning behind the strike.

When to use it

Use it inside the pocket, often as the finish of a combination that has walked you into elbow range or after slipping a punch. The rear elbow carries the most rotational power of the horizontal elbows and is a reliable cutter and knockout tool up close.

Common mistakes

  • Winding up so the opponent sees it and clinches or steps off the line
  • Rotating only the arm without the hip, which drains the power
  • Reaching from range so the elbow arrives short and off target
