Switch Knee

Knees · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)

Switch the feet and drive the lead knee with the momentum of the swap.

How to throw it

Hop and switch your feet so the rear leg comes forward, then drive the newly loaded lead knee up into the target on the momentum of the swap. Point the toe down, thrust the hips through, and pull down on the head or reach across the guard to close the distance and add power. Keep your hands up and your chin tucked as the knee spears upward.

When to use it

Throw it in the clinch or in mid-range when you want a knee off the lead side with more force than a standing knee gives you. The switch loads the hip so it lands heavier and can catch an opponent who reads only your rear knee.

Common mistakes

  • Telegraphing the switch with a big hop so the opponent reads the knee before it launches
  • Leaning back instead of driving the hips forward, which kills the power of the swap
  • Dropping the hands during the switch and leaving the head open to a counter
