Lead Body Hook

Punches · Lead side (Orthodox left, Southpaw right)

Hook to the ribs or liver off the lead hand; a classic fight-ender.

How to throw it

Bend the knees to get under the elbow line and turn the lead hip through as you hook into the ribs or liver with the elbow raised. Keep the arc tight and dig the shot in rather than swinging wide, and hold the rear hand high to protect your head at close range. Let the leg drive and hip turn deliver the punch, not the arm alone.

When to use it

The lead body hook targets the ribs and liver and can end a fight, so you throw it when you are inside and the opponent's elbow lifts or their guard rides high. It rewards patience behind punches that pull the hands up.

Common mistakes

  • Swinging around the elbow instead of digging underneath it, so the shot glances off the arm.
  • Standing tall rather than bending the knees, which robs the hook of leverage into the ribs.
  • Dropping the free hand to load, leaving your head open while you work downstairs.
