Jab → Cross → Rear Low Kick
EasyJab, Cross, Rear Low Kick is the first combination most Muay Thai gyms teach, and for good reason. The punches force the guard up and load your weight forward, setting up a leg kick that scores round after round.
What this combo trains
This combo builds the fundamental link between hands and legs: using punches to occupy the guard and shift weight so the low kick has a clear path. The jab and cross drive your opponent to defend high, which pulls attention off the lead leg. That is exactly the target the rear low kick chops into, teaching you to attack the head and legs in one sequence rather than as separate ideas.
Step by step
- 1.Jab
Snap the jab off your lead hand to find range and bring the opponent's guard up. Keep it light and fast so it flows straight into the cross.
- 2.Cross
Drive the cross off your rear hand with hip rotation, shifting your weight forward onto the lead side. That forward load is what sets the platform for the kick.
- 3.Rear Low Kick
Chop the rear low kick into the opponent's lead thigh, swinging the whole leg through with your hip. Their weight is on that leg while they defend the punches, so it lands clean.
Common mistakes
- Arm-punching the cross without rotating the hips, so you never load the weight forward that the kick needs.
- Telegraphing the kick by dropping the punching hands or resetting your stance before you swing.
- Kicking with the foot instead of driving through the shin and hip, which robs the low kick of its chopping power.
- Pausing between the cross and the kick, giving the opponent time to lift the leg and check.
Who it suits
A foundational combo for beginners in either stance, and one advanced fighters never stop drilling. It works from orthodox or southpaw because the app mirrors every left and right to your stance.
Why it works
The bread and butter of Muay Thai. The punches bring the guard up and shift weight forward, which opens the lead leg for the rear low kick.
