Cross

Punches · Rear side (Orthodox right, Southpaw left)

Straight power punch off the rear hand, driven by hip rotation.

How to throw it

Drive the cross from the rear hand by turning your rear hip and pivoting the rear foot so the power flows from the ground through your core into the fist. Extend straight down the centre line, rotating the fist over at the end, and keep your lead hand up to protect against the return. Let your weight transfer forward onto the lead leg without falling past it.

When to use it

The cross is your primary straight power punch, thrown behind the jab to convert an opening into real damage at mid range. It also works as a hard counter when an opponent leads and leaves the centre line open.

Common mistakes

  • Arming the punch from the shoulder alone without rotating the hip, so it lands with no weight behind it.
  • Failing to pivot the rear foot, which locks the hip and shortens both reach and power.
  • Dropping the lead hand as the cross extends, exposing you to the counter hook.
