Lead Check → Cross → Lead Hook

Easy

The most-taught counter in Muay Thai. Check the kick, then answer immediately while they are on one leg and unbalanced at the end of their own strike.

What this combo trains

This drills defence flowing straight into offence. Because they are on one leg and unbalanced at the end of their own kick, the check creates a perfect window for hands. You train the timing to convert a block into a counter without hesitation, and the balance to fire the cross and hook while their base is compromised. It builds the reflex every Muay Thai fighter needs against the round kick.

Step by step

  1. 1.
    Lead Check

Lift the lead shin to check the incoming kick, staying tall and balanced so you can counter the instant it lands.

  2. 2.
    Cross

Plant the checking foot and drive the cross off the rear hip into their exposed centreline while they stand on one leg.

  3. 3.
    Lead Hook

Turn the lead hip through and land the lead hook, elbow up, catching them before they can recover their base.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the checking leg lazily and losing the balance you need to counter immediately.
  • Waiting too long after the check, letting them plant their kicking leg and reset their guard.
  • Reaching with the cross instead of setting the foot first, so the punch has no power behind it.
  • Dropping the lead hand after the cross so the hook loops in wide and slow.

Who it suits

An easy, essential counter for all levels. It works from orthodox or southpaw because the app mirrors every left and right to your stance.

Why it works
